(Icis Premier League) 16th August 1997

Oxford City (0) 1 Jenkins (pen) 82
Enfield (1) 2 West 6; Gentle 57

What looked to be a comfortable away win was so nearly converted into an annoying draw. May, and then Endersby missed an easy chance to settle the game at 3-0 - Endersby being guilty of just a touch of showboating by appearing to spurn three golden opportunities to blast home - wanting just that extra piece of trickery as he walked the ball into the net. The ball was cleared, a penalty conceded shortly afterwards, and the final ten minutes were nailbiting till the final whistle. Earlier, the game had gone according to last year's form, with West, and then Gentle scoring from headers.
On the sidelines, things were somewhat overheating with a number of strange offside decisions that mystified the traveling support. Enfield's Mr. Fruitbat
familiar faces was not at all amused, and let off a couple of broadsides in the direction of the nearest official, who was having none of it. As the flag was raised for yet another questionable decision, from the touchline came the classic remark: 'I haven't paid £5 for you to block my view. Get your fat arse out of the way!'
It was not until City's consolation goal that we were treated to the full selection of their supporters song vocabulary... 'Oxford!' BONG, BONG, BONG. They just don't make songs like that anymore!

Precious little entertainment to be found in a match that had lost the attention of the crowd long before the cat-calling began. Dulwich Hamlet's No.5. Russell Edwards must have wondered just what he had let himself in for when he engaged Leroy May in a toe-to-toe confrontation at the start of the second half, for with little else to cheer, the Enfield regulars just let Edwards have it in the ear for the rest of the match. Graham Monk and his hapless officials also came in for a fair amount of abuse with their continual stoppages throughout the game.
Any good points? Well, Danny Adams avoided being yellow carded. I was there to see it as well! Mark Bowen in the visitors goal also managed to brighten up the game with his juggling act on the half hour when, back pedaling to keep out a Jason Tucker effort from near the halfway line, he managed to collide with the goal post while fumbling the ball - making a complete arse of himself in the process.
Dulwich Hamlet looked quite capable of snatching all three points in the closing moments, with a barrage of efforts on Pape's goal. It was left to Steve West to blast a shot high, wide and less than handsome over the bar when it looked easier to score.

Enfield (1) 3 West 45,61; Moran 54
Hendon (1) 3 Nugent 45; Bateman 71; Richardson 81

An entertaining game for the neutral, though I dare say that George Borg went ballistic in the dressing room after seeing Enfield throw away a two goal lead. The spark to set this goal-scoring spree came on the stroke of half time, when Steve West powered in a Moran cross from the right to beat Lomas at the far post. Immediately, Nugent converted a header of his own to send the teams in level at the break
Moran and then West quickly restored Enfield's scoreline dominance. Moran applying the finishing touch to an Endersby cross which should have been collected by Lomas; Moran set up West again for another well taken header. That should have been enough to seal the game, but the defence switched off long enough for Bateman to cut the deficit, then ex-E Richardson to snatch a point at the end as he collected from a loose free kick before firing past Pape.

A point from the bookies title favourites must be regarded as a good result, though there were a number of chances to take the win. Leroy May was guilty of a glaring miss when he should have blasted past Kingstonian's keeper in a one against one situation, but instead chose to walk the ball into the net and gave the keeper a chance to save at his feet. Andy Pape saved Enfield with a fine save from Leeworthy in the second half, then in the last ten minutes made a wondersave when Enfield looked happy to settle for a point.

Yeading (0) 0
Enfield (1) 2 May 23, 88

A brace of goals by Leroy May. The first came midway through the first half when he picked up a loose ball, before calmly slotting past a hapless keeper. The second came right at the end when Moran collected a weak clearance from the same keeper, before supplying a perfect pass to May, who made the keeper look a right daisy before tapping the ball into an empty net. Earlier, Pape had pulled off a couple of fine saves to deny a lively Yeading forward line.
