Steven Edwards reports:

A controversial penalty in the 90th minute was enough to give Enfield a share of the spoils and deny Boreham Wood a vital three points. Enfield, who were denied permission by the Ryman League to play this fixture at Boreham Wood, were forced to have their 6th home venue of the season at Bishops Stortford FC, due to Hendon playing at home. On a far from welcoming pitch, covered in sand, it was Boreham Wood who started off brighter and the lively Mark Robson tested goalkeeper Andy Hall after just four minutes with a 25 yard belter that was tipped over well. Then, only a few minutes later, a free kick from Robson deluded the Enfield defence and John Lawford drifted in at the far post unmarked, only to fire over from six yards. Half chances fell to Enfield from Grant Cooper and the tricky John Morgan but it wasn't until midway through the first half that Enfield had their first real chance. A corner from Simon Livett was met with a stinging shot from new signing up front from Haringey Borough, Jean-Marie Okita, which was parried away excellently by Glen Knight whilst on the floor. Jamie Morris picked up the ball on the right but his rising shot was palmed over. The Wood however, looked like scoring more than Enfield who couldn't beat the commanding Lee Harvey in defence.

It wasn't long into the second half, when Boreham Wood inevitably took the lead. A cross from the right by Chris Mcmenemin was flicked on by Enfield captain Wayne Brown to Keiren Adama who headed home powerfully. Finally, with an hour gone, Enfield came to life. The dangerous Jamie Morris went on a jinxing run and James Bunn's clever back heel found Danny Jones who cracked a shot against Knight's far post. But, the Wood defence was strong and was frustrating Bunn so much that he demanded to be taken off. It looked as if Boreham Wood had the three points in the bag. However, a long throw from Glenn Southgate in the 90th minute, into the area caused confusion and the referee blew up for reasons no-one seemed to quite know. Substitute Glen Southam stepped up and although Knight parried the shot well, Okita headed home the rebound on his debut. Enfield survived a two minute onslaught from there to earn a point. After the full-time whistle, referee Gary Monk had to be escorted from the pitch as a furious Boreham Wood manager, Colin Payne protested. It remains to be seen how vital that penalty is to Boreham Wood's premier status.

Back to the real world after the joyous demolition of Aldershot Town last weekend. After lifting their performance level in front of a 2,000+ gate, here was the same old story this season of a side unable to find inspiration from vast empty terraces and unable to maintain any kind of consistency from one match to the next.
Whilst Saturday's fixture was played on a near perfect surface, tonight's was a wet and muddy pitch, taking on more rain as the game progressed. Georgiou put Enfield on the back foot from the start - heading home unmarked from close range in the opening twenty minutes. James Bunn created Enfield's best chance of the half, failing by inches to beat Mead low to the keepers left. Purfleet's close marking and at times questionable off-the-ball methods were proving to be quite effective until Rattray was given more than just a subtle push from behind in the penalty area. Jones stepped up for one of the most comfortable conversions from the spot.

By the time Protheroe shot tamely wide for the first Enfield effort of the second half, Purfleet had added two more goals to show for their dominance. Coombs had repeated Georgiou's earlier effort to score unopposed at the far post, whilst Webb - on loan from Leyton Orient, so we were told - stretched the lead to 3-1 with relative ease.
James Bunn continued his goalscoring form in the form of a rather speculative lob/shot from an impossible angle. Taking the ball on his chest from a throw in, he somehow managed to turn and put a cross into the area that somehow looped over Mead and dropped in at the far post, taking the congratulations in rather a sombre mood. Sadly, the game ended as a contest within a minute, with the old problems of dealing with crosses into the penalty area ending in a fourth for Purfleet, along with the points. Jerome John ended the game with two fine point blank saves to keep the score down to some kind of respectability. A pushing and shoving match in front of the bench was the only extra entertainment, with the linesman on the far touchline seemingly wanting to get involved as well.

PS. One extra point on this match concerns what the snack bar called the "Fleet Burger". My goodness, anyone who has managed to complete this 2xburger/bacon/cheese deserves a mention in despatches. Certainly one to look out for after a session in the hotel before the game (next season?).
